Planning a Future Pregnancy
There is a genetic link for Spina Bifida with an increased risk of 1 in 20 of a further child being affected. This risk can be reduced if the mother is taking folate (folic acid) prior to falling pregnant again. If a future pregnancy is planned it is recommended that 5mgs of folic acid is taken daily.
If a family member (brother or sister) has Spina Bifida or has a child with Spina Bifida, then 5mgs of folic acid should be taken daily.
Mothers taking anticonvulsant medication or receiving fertility treatment should also take 5mgs folic acid daily.
Anyone without a family history of Spina Bifida planning a pregnancy should take 0.8mg folic acid daily.
Folate (folic acid) can be purchased over the counter at pharmacies and is also available on prescription. Please discuss this with your Doctor.
